Calm in the Midst of a Financial Storm

For the past 4 months my heart has been rolling and rumbling with undeniable, overwhelming gratitude for God’s financial provision for my family. I want to share what God has done for us, but it is hard to explain without knowing the whole story. So here goes.

I grew up knowing that God is our Source, our Provider. I never had a problem being generous and was often manipulated to give beyond my means. Because of my own issues and a lot of bad teaching, I felt like I had to do something to be worthy of God’s blessing or that sowing and reaping was some sort of formula to get God to bless me. I realize now, that my faith was very much in my own ability to control or manipulate the situation. I never fully relied on Him.

It got to the point that I was over $10,000 in credit card debt. I was working a job making less than $600.00 a month; not even enough to pay for bare minimal necessities. All while I volunteered full-time at my church. For 3 years I had been using credit to keep up appearances, paying bills and being a blessing to the ministry. The poop hit the fan for me when I could no longer afford to keep up the illusion.  I hit rock bottom and chose to surrender my control to Him. Not just in finances, but in every area I had been resisting Him.  I had to humble myself and seek help. I started doing the practical, stopped accumulating debt and worked very hard to pay down the balance, an impossible task on my salary. All the while God was calling me to be missionary to Mexico.  There was no way I would be able to support myself. I told God, “If You want me to go to Mexico, You have to pay for it.”  And He did.

June 2010 – God provided one single supporter to fund me to be a missionary to Mexico. My whole time in Mexico was filled with supernatural provision, I’ll save all of those stories for another day.

This solidified God’s goodness to me. When I was at my worst, I did not have to do anything to be good enough for God to use me or to bless me. He showed up when I stopped striving to do it in my own power and actually rested in Him. Because I have this history with Him my faith in God’s ability to provide is unwavering. As a result, my husband, Jesús, has been witness to my faith and God’s supernatural provision in our lives. He now holds that same faith and trust in God’s provision. Time and time again God has put things on our hearts, and each time the door opens we have been ready to take the step of faith with the assurance that He will meet us in the process.

Moving to Redding CA had been a pipe dream of mine for years. When the opportunity came for us to move, the decision was not taken lightly. I always imagined I would be a stay-at-home mom, but in the States my husband did not have permission to work at that time. I knew I would have to enter the workforce and worried I did not have the skills to make enough money to support us. On top of that, I heard from many Redding residents that the job market was extremely competitive and most had a very hard time finding work.

March 2015 – Married with a one year old baby, we sold everything we owned and came to Redding, CA with $1000 in the bank and 3 suitcases. God provided a car, a job for me and place for us live. We never went without.

After being the sole provider for my family for almost 3 years, I knew it was time for me to stay home. After the birth of our 3rd child I took the step of faith and resigned. My husband, Jesús, had never been employed because he worked for himself in Mexico, on top of that English is his second language. He applied to be pizza delivery driver and some minimum wage retail positions.

January 2018 – Jesús was hired by the company he always dreamed of working for. A company with a .3% acceptance rate, more selective that getting into Harvard.

June 2018 – The company restructured, laying off over 3,000 employees, my husband included.

When he received the news, it was disappointing of course, but I was filled with so much peace. If God provided the last job, that was a complete miracle and answer to prayer He of course will provide us with another source of income. We have history with God and His provision so we know that He ALWAYS provides.

My husband has been out of work for the past 4 months and not for lack of trying. We have been living off of our savings (a miracle in itself that we have savings with our low-income these past few years). Every time we are about to run out of money more shows up. We have found money. Accounts that we forgot about or that we thought were closed have had just the right about in them to get us through another month. People have commissioned my husband to do art work/graphic design for them. Our utility bills had the deposit credited back to the account so we have not had to pay utilities all summer. I have had my coffee paid for. Found gift cards, been given gift cards, received special offers for free things. This season has been one of rest, connection and overwhelming gratitude for Gods provision.

As I am sitting here writing this, my husband has just been offered a position with an amazing company in Sacramento. Nothing less than a Divine appointment! We look forward to what God has in store for us as we continue this faith walk with Him.

So be encouraged whatever financial situation you find yourself in. If He did it for us, He can do it for you! You do not have to strive, just rest in Him and follow what gives your heart peace.
